Changing the game

As an Aboriginal person in business, I have the privilege of regularly talking to and meeting with a wide range of Aboriginal and Torres Islander people with similar backgrounds and journeys into the business world. It seems like every week these days that I come across another impressive idea or individual that’s taking the market by storm. As this is happening more and more, as the movement grows and as confidence levels increase in the Indigenous business sector, so does the size and scope and ambition of the entrepreneurs and trailblazers who are leading the way in this space. It’s an exciting thing to witness and to also take part in myself with my own ventures. For me, the most exciting aspect of all of this is that attitudes are changing fast. We no longer see Indigenous-owned businesses simply happy to be just tinkering at the margins, we now see leaders who want their companies to truly take on the top end of town and change the Australian corporate landscape for good. When the Irish superstar Conor Macgregor famously said, “We’re not here to just take part, we’re here to take over!” I couldn’t help but admire the phrase. Perhaps “taking over” is a bit of a far reach, but the sentiment is there: we Indigenous business owners are here to make some noise and to be as successful as we can be. Why shouldn’t we have a bunch of Indigenous-owned companies listed on the ASX? Why shouldn’t we aspire to be the best we can be? I believe that having this ambition will help to change the way Australia views Indigenous businesses and Indigenous people in general.
