With the recent launch of Inspire Travel Management, a business travel management company that services the travel needs of some of Australia’s biggest companies, I’m often asked what Inspire is all about and where the ‘Inspire’ name came from. Beyond our commercial proposition, which is very much focused on delivering industry-leading travel management services, Inspire is committed to getting Indigenous people with barriers to employment into meaningful careers. At the heart of our mission to provide careers in the travel industry, is the understanding that jobs can change lives. To give people a chance, to train them up and help secure them a better future, is to also give people a sense of purpose, responsibility, independence and, importantly, pride. I believe the far-reaching impacts of meaningful work should never be underestimated. In my own personal life, growing up in the Tweed Heads area, I witnessed directly how unemployment can lead to a wide range of social problems. I saw that not having a job – a pay-cheque, a positive way to participate in the community, a sense of meaning – can keep people trapped in a cycle of negativity. But I was lucky enough to recognise early on that if I had a career, my prospects of getting ahead in life were increased by a huge amount. I also saw that those who did focus on forging a career became leaders and mentors and brought others along with them. Understanding this and having first-hand experience with the good and the bad sides of the equation has really helped me to get to where I am today.
